William Van Brunt (Van) Lewis in 2006
Van Lewis died in Tallahassee, Florida on Monday June 6, 2011 at 12.15 of pancreatic cancer. He was 68.
Van was the earliest known Intactivist. On December 16, 1970, he and his brother Ben carried signs saying "Infant Circumcision is a Sex Crime. Abolish it." "Sex Criminals for Hire? Inquire Within." "Abolish Infant Circumcision." and "Men's Liberation" outside the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Tallahassee, Florida, and were arrested. They were charged with disturbing the peace and spent a day in the cells. Van took an active part in the movement until mid-April this year, when his last messages were a list of circumcision deaths.
"You can catch more flies with
honey AND vinegar than you can with either one alone"
- Van Lewis
